Structures of Feeling – transmediale 2019 Opening
Structures of Feeling – transmediale 2019 Opening
Affect, emotion, feeling: everyone now is talking about those domains that are traditionally relegated to the unsaid of society. This present turn to feeling is about social, technological, and political transformations that transmediale 2019 proposes can be understood from the point of view of what Raymond Williams once called “Structures of Feeling”: emergent cultural sentiments and areas of practice not yet fully apprehended by institutions or a coherent semantic framework. From a tech-tutorial on emotions in machine learning to an ethnography of feelings of inferiority, the opening brings together different perspectives in a discussion on how contemporary structures of feeling are captured in technology and social structures as well as their potential for creativity and change.
