Alsona by Emilija Škarnulytd

In 1986, Aldona lost her vision. The nerves in her eyes were poisoned, said the doctors, who claimed that this probably happened due to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion. In the film, Emilija Škarnulytė follows Aldona, her grandmother, on her daily journey to Grūtas Park, a sculpture garden of Soviet-era statues and relics near Druskininkai in the southwest of Lithuania. By reading the wrinkled surfaces of the monumental sculptures with her hands, she touches both the past and the present: a gesture of forgiving and tenderness. The blind seer is an old archetype. They are blind, but yet they can see more than we can.
